Transportation

Our transportation services are available to seniors who wish to limit their driving, or have stopped driving altogether, and to adults with temporary or long-term disabilities.

Couple in careAn intake assessment will be completed to determine the type of transportation best suited to the client's needs.  Volunteer drivers are available for those clients that are able to get into and out of a car without assistance.  Van Drivers are available for clients requiring assistance into a vehicle and for those using a mobility device (e.g. walkers, wheelchairs, scooters.)

Our transportation service may be used for medical appointments, shopping/errands, or social engagements that occur in and around Lambton County.  We operate with a 160km radius of our office at Reece's Corners (excluding U.S.A.) seven days a week; services are subject to availability.

Our transportation service is door to door; however, you may bring someone with you free of charge so that they can assist  you to your destination.

Homemaking (Personal Care)

Personal support worker

Our Personal Support Workers will assist with personal care needs and activities of daily living.  They are available to provide service seven days a week.  There is a set hourly fee for this services. 

 

Duties performed by our Personal Support Workers

  • Assistance with bathing (sponge, bed, tub, shower) & toileting
  • Mobility assistance (transferring, walking, etc.)
  • Eating, dressing, shaving, mouth care, skin care
  • Medication reminders
  • Light housekeeping and organization
  • Grocery shopping
  • Meal preparation
  • Laundry, including hand washing of clothes and ironing
  • Escort to medical appointments


Home Help

Cleaning home

Our Home Support Workers will assist with light housekeeping and home help needs.  They are available to provide service seven days a week.  There is a set hourly fee for this service; subsidized rates are available.

  • Light housekeeping and organization
  • Grocery shopping
  • Meal preparation
  • Laundry, including hand washing of clothes and ironing

 

Duties not Performed by our Personal Support Workers / Home Support Workers

  • Cleaning or changing your storm windows
  • Spraying for pests
  • Washing walls, cleaning garbage and basements
  • Sewing beyond basic repairs
  • Painting and wallpapering
  • Weeding, raking, pruning or cutting grass
  • Rearranging furniture
  • Turning mattresses
  • Applying heating pads
  • Dying, cutting and / or perming hair
  • Removing hair with tweezers
  • Purchasing of non-prescription drugs, alcohol or tobacco products
  • Pickling vegetables, freezing and preserving
  • Cutting finger nails or toe nails
  • Administering medications (prescription or non-prescription)
  • Procedures normally performed by a health care professional


Caregiver Respite & Support

Caregiver respite and support

Caregiver Respite provides relief for family and friends from their care giving role.  To qualify for this service you must be a full time caregiver for someone living with Alzheimer's Disease or Dementia.  While our focus for respite is on those living with Alzheimer's Disease or Dementia, other respite needs will be considered on a case by case basis.  If you qualify for this service, a Personal Support Worker will be scheduled for respite as needed for up to twelve hours a month free of charge.

In addition to Respite Services, our staff can provide Caregiver Support through information, education and training to assist anyone that has taken on the role of caregiver.



Friendly Visiting

Friendly visiting

This service is of no cost and is available to those living alone who would like to have a regular visit by one of our friendly volunteers.  We will match you with a volunteer with similar interests and hobbies.  Volunteers are available to talk, listen, participate in activities, and provide companionship.



Home Maintenance

Home maintenance

Home maintenance workers are made available for minor home repairs, major housecleaning and for lawn / yard maintenance.

 

Home repairs and major housecleaning are offered as part of our Brokered Home Maintenance Program where our role is to set up the client with a qualified home mainentance worker; the fee for service is negotiated between the client and the home maintenance worker.  To access the service the client must sign our Undertaking and Release Agreement for home maintenance service which can be downloaded below.


Client Intervention and Assistance

Client Intervention

A Case Manager will assist and support you to work through crisis situations by offering counselling, intervention and referral information.  The focus of our program is on assisting clients in crisis, including those in Elder Abuse situations, as well as on Transitional Care Planning for Long Term Care residents returning to the community.

There is no cost for this program.

Meals on Wheels

 

Meals on Wheels

Nutritious meals delivered as frozen entrees, soups and desserts are available for delivery throughout rural Lambton County.  You can order frozen meals as a reqular meal plan, or as a supplement to your regular cooking.  A minimum order is not required.

There are many selections on our Meal Order Form or you can phone the office to have a Meal Order Form, and an order / delivery schedule mailed to you.  Special diets can be accommodated.

The cost of meals is dependent of type and location.

For Meals on Wheels WITHIN SARNIA (including Bright's Grove and Point Edward) please call the RED CROSS at 519-332-6380.

Hot Meals are also available for delivery up to three time per week, depending on the area.  You must live within the town limits to receive hot meals.  The hot meal includes an entrees, a soup and dessert.  Hot meal delivery days are as follows:

Diner's Club

Diners Club

Our Diner's Club offers an opportunity for seniors to get together for a social dining experience.  Doors open at 11:30 am, with lunch served at noon.  Entertainment, social activities and / or education sessions follow the luncheon from 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm.

Diner's Club are held in Port Lambton, Corunna, Petrolia and Alvinston.  Phone the office to confirm dates, locations and times as some Diner's Club take a break over the summer.

Transportation to and from the program can be arranged through our office.

Grocery shopping

Phone our office to arrange for grocery shopping and delivery by one of our volunteers.  The volunteer will visit you to review your grocery list, and will then go shopping for your groceries.


You are required to pay by cash or cheque upon the receipt of the groceries and presentation of the receipt.

A nominal fee is charged for this program.



Forever Fit, Exercise for Seniors

Senior excercise

We offer low impact exercise program for seniors that includes the following components: warm up, cardio, cool down, strengthening, balance and flexibility.  All classes are one hour in length.  Class components are designed by the Centre for Activity and Aging, and are led by trained volunteers.

Exercise classes are held in Forest, Oil Springs, Sombra, Wyoming and Corunna.  See the following schedule for dates, times and location of the classes.

Sessions run from the fall to spring with a break over the summer.  Times and dates of classes are subject to change, please phone the office to confirm times and dates.

55 Alive Mature Driving Program

 

Senior driving

55 Alive is a theory based driver refresher course for seniors.  It is a six hour course in a classroom setting.  It is led by volunteer instructors who were trained through the Canada Safety Council.

The following is reviewed during the course:

  • Review of safety principles
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Minor vehicle maintenance
  • Theory of driver preparation


55 Alive Sessions are held at various times throughout the year in locations across Lambton County.  Phone the office for upcoming dates, times and locations.

A nominal fee is charged for this course.  You will receive a workbook when you sign up and a certificate upon course completion.
